How to Clean Your Awnings

Now that summer is around the corner, and you know from last week’s blog how to choose the awning that is right for you, cleaning your awning may still be an area of confusion. It seems simple, at first–but you could ruin a good awning if you don’t clean it properly. And there are so many different types of awnings! If you’re wondering what the right steps are for cleaning your awning, you should read on.
Determine the needs of your awning
First, you’re going to need to decide exactly what your awning needs. A retractable awning, a stationary awning–material is important, too. Fabric awnings are going to have much different needs. Also, how much weather has your awning seen? You should retract awnings, if you can, during rain and snow. If you haven’t, you may want to do work with more care.
Cleaning the supports
Wipe down all metal with a rag and some soapy water. Nothing fancy! You may need to oil up the mechanisms that work for your retractable awning, if you have one. Depending on where your awning is, you may need to scrub with a soft brush to get the grime away.
Cleaning the canopy
This should be relatively similar for both metal and fabric awnings. Grab a hose and gently rinse the surface–be sure not to use your power washer. Awnings made of metal may be able to take it, but it’s unnecessary and wastes water. Also, if you have a fabric awning, it could damage the fabric or stretch it out. Use a soapy mixture and work it into the fabric, and allow it to fully soak. After that, you can rinse thoroughly and leave out in the sun to dry.
The importance of cleaning your awning
Not only will it look better, but your awning can harbor bacteria from animals that may end up harming you. Debris and leaves may also get caught on top and cause water to gather and weather the fabric faster. Still, how often you clean your awning depends on how frequently you care for it and which kind of awning you choose.
