Metal vs. Aluminum Awnings

Posted on Saturday, July 28th, 2018 at 3:37 am.

Metal and aluminum awnings both have their own perks and are great options for any home or business!

Not all awnings are built the same. If you’re thinking of adding an awning to the exterior of your home or business, you should understand the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of each option. Awnings, in general, are great for extending the use of your outdoor space by blocking direct sunlight and rain. They also help protect outdoor wood elements from moisture damage. Although many people prefer the look of canvas awnings, it’s a fact that both metal and aluminum are more durable. Here’s some insight into the metal versus aluminum awning debate.

Aluminum Awnings

The first notable difference between aluminum awnings and their metal counterparts is that aluminum options are usually less expensive than metal. Aluminum is also lighter in weight than metal, making them easier to install. They are also more environmentally friendly when compared to metal and provide a more modern appearance, which can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the design of your exterior. The downside of aluminum awnings is that they require more regular maintenance than metal. They are susceptible to rust and require a waterproofing treatment to be able to withstand the constant exposure to rain. If you see any signs of rust, you may need to quickly address those problem spots before they grow and become bigger problems. Aluminum awnings are able to be attached to almost any style of exterior material, making them incredibly versatile and useful. Although you may be able to find retractable models, most are rigid and fixed in one place.

Metal Awnings

Metal awnings are usually made of copper, which is one of the most durable, reliable, and sturdiest materials used in construction. In fact, it’s likely that you’ll never find yourself needing to repair a high-quality metal awning. You’ll likely get up to 30 years of use from a metal awning. They are incredibly strong and able to withstand hurricane strength winds. Over time, the awning will start to show signs of age by developing a sheen. While some owners like the sheen, others will need to apply a treatment to help it maintain its original finish. When compared to aluminum, you will notice a higher initial cost for installation, but the investment is definitely worth it.
