Here are some tips to help keep your retractable awning in good condition, so you don’t get caught out in the rain.
Windy Conditions
Retractable awnings offer protection from the sun and are engineered to withstand winds from 15 MPH to 40 MPH. A good way to think about it is that if it’s too windy for you to comfortably sit under an awning then it is also too windy for the awning, and should be retracted. A heavy gust of wind that gets under your awning’s fabric can lift it beyond its endurance and cause rips or other damage.
Heavy Rain
If the pitch on your retractable awning is adequate for run off, then light rain will not be too much a problem. If you see puddles of water forming on the awning cover you should immediately retract the awning so that the water can run off properly.
Remember that awnings are designed for shade from the sun and should not be expected to shield against heavy rain or snow. Make sure you avoid damage to your awning by keeping a look out for harsh weather conditions before they happen. A motorized awning with a sun and wind sensor to automatically extend and retract your awning as needed is also an option.
Awning Maintenance
The beauty of awnings is that they are nearly maintenance free. After a rainstorm be sure to check your awning of any leftover rain that might puddle to prevent the awning from staining or stretching. If your awning gets dirty from storm debris you can clean your awning easily with soap and water.
